Our Story

A Legacy of Excellence Since 1982

Athimba Coffee Farm was founded in 1982 by the late Michael N. Raphael, whose dream was to build a modest home in the fertile highlands of Mt. Kenya East, nestled within the Nyambene Hills. This region, with its tropical volcanic red soils and ideal climate, offered perfect conditions for cultivating both coffee and tea.

Michael chose to focus on coffee farming, which required relatively less effort to establish and manage. The Nyambene Hills receive between 1,200 mm and 1,400 mm of rainfall annually, optimal conditions that allow for two coffee harvests each year. Located near the equator, the farm benefits from consistent seasonal cycles, which influence both the quality and quantity of the coffee produced.

Driven by passion and dedication, Michael started a coffee seedling nursery and then transplanted the young plants across the farm. Today, the farm continues to thrive under his family's care, who took over after his passing in 2010. Committed to honoring his legacy, they not only sustain the coffee operation but have also expanded into the export market.

Location

The Athimba farm sits on 50 acres of arable land in Maua, Meru. On average, one acre of the farm accommodates 500 coffee bushes, each yielding about 17-20 kilograms, sufficient to meet both export demands and local market goals.

"We empower women, honor heritage, and deliver authentic farm-direct quality to roasters and importers around the world."

Authenticity is our foundation. Every bean we grow is a product of over four decades of heritage, rooted in the legacy of our founder, the late Michael N. Raphael. From the volcanic soils of the Nyambene Hills to your roastery, our coffee reflects the true spirit of Mount Kenya untainted, unblended, and grown entirely at source. We stay true to traditional practices while embracing modern excellence, delivering a taste of place in every cup.

Our value chain is powered by people, and especially by women. At the heart of our operations are the skilled women who lead our coffee processing with unmatched care and precision. By creating opportunities for women in rural communities, we don't just produce coffee, we build livelihoods, promote gender equity, and ensure quality with a human touch that sets us apart.

We produce coffee not just with passion, but with predictability and precision. Thanks to the unique climate of the Mount Kenya region, we enjoy two harvest seasons each year, allowing us to supply fresh coffee throughout the year. Our controlled estate farming, rigorous post-harvest processing, and quality assurance protocols ensure our clients receive consistent flavor, grade, and performance in every shipment.

Transparency is non-negotiable at Athimba. We offer full traceability for every lot, from plot-level origins and farmer records to processing methods and shipping documentation. Our clients know exactly where their coffee comes from and how it was handled, building trust through clarity and ethical sourcing every step of the way.
